The Tokyo Blizzard: Beauty in the Chaos

In the moment.

________

This time last year Brad and I found ourselves snowed-in in Tokyo, happily snuggled in our beautiful hotel room in Shinagawa. As we later discovered that day, Tokyo isn't particularly equip for snow days. It's the only time during our whole tour of Japan that the trains weren't actually on time (the shock, the horror!). And when it finally stopped snowing later that night, the roads and paths were slick with a thick, lumpy layer of slippery ice. Indeed, there was no sign of snow pushers, shovels or salt, making the whole city somewhat chaotic.

But there was beauty in chaos. There was a peacefulness I don't think I've ever experience during a blizzard previously (for a Perth girl, I've strangely experienced a fair few in my 20-something years). Determined not to spend the whole day inside, we ventured out of the hotel only to discover the most stunning and serene Japanese garden wedged in-between modern buildings. That's the thing about this magical city, home to over 13-million people; somehow in the middle of the hustle and bustle you'll discover little pockets of manicured greenery, complete with wooden bridges and traditional shrines.

Rugged up, thermals and all, Brad captured the white-out in all its glory, under the protection of an umbrella. And while it seemed I was completely covered in snow, head-to-toe, I didn't mind knowing that the moment I stepped inside I'd be soaking wet. I was in the moment and loving every moment of dancing in one of the biggest blizzards Tokyo has seen in 50-years.

This time in a week, we'll be back in Japan, and my goodness I can not wait.
