How To Create The Messy Side Bun

An easy look I've been recreating for years (throwbacks included!).

________

I'm not very adventurous with my hair. If you look back to the beginning of my blog days, not much has really changed (proof here and here - what a throwback!) and that was three years ago! It's still long, parted in the centre (generally) and has a slight, yet faded, balayage. Tick, tick and tick. Yeah, I've worn it in a ponytail or a side plait on the odd occasion, but my favourite style is the messy side bun, which I've been recreating for years.

STEP-BY-STEP TUTORIAL:

STEP 1: Firstly, create some volume by spraying the Toni&Guy Glamour 3D Volumiser at your roots and then the Sea Salt Texturising Spray to the rest of your hair if you want it to be super messy (say yes!), then roughly blow dry.

STEP 2: Using a brush, lightly tease your hair from the roots down, leaving the top layer smooth (ain't nobody got time for birds nest hair). You might look a little crazy at this stage, but don't worry, it's going to be worth it.

Tip: Use a detangling brush to brush out the teased hair when taking out the look.

STEP 3: Smoothing down any bits that are too teased lightly with the hairbrush, pull your hair into a secure side pony tail just behind the ear. You don't want it to be too high, otherwise it might look a little comical.

STEP 4: Lightly spray your pony tail with hair spray or a texturising spray/powder, like this one from V05, then tease again. Don't be shy on the teasing either. The more you tease, the more dramatic it will look. If you're looking for a more sleek look, go light on the teasing.

STEP 5: Twist only the top half of your pony tail as you wrap it around the hair elastic to make the bun. Leaving the rest will make it look less 'done' and more fabulous (if you know what I mean).

STEP 6: Secure with another hair elastic (if you're constantly losing them like me, then this pack is for you!), preferably one that matches your hair colour or  bobby pins if you can get away with it. Pin away the pokey-outy bits if they're stick out too much, but remember the key is for it to not be perfect. You can also loosen up the style a bit if you want to by simply pulling random bits around the face.

And voila!

Tip: After brushing the look out, I highly suggest applying a hair treatment to smooth out any lumps and bumps (V05 does the best  in-shower hot oil treatment!). After all, teasing isn't really the best thing for your hair now, is it?
