5 Reasons I'm Addicted to Facial Serums

And why you should be too!

________

Serums have been a crucial part of my skincare regime this year (not to be confused with oils, of course). Yeah, they tend to be pretty expensive compared to the rest of our skincare products, but that's because they're rich in amazing potent ingredients that directly target skincare concerns. A typical serum will last you for quite some time too, since only a little is needed during each application; a little goes a long way.

Generally speaking, serums should be applied twice daily, though some work better applied in the AM and other work better applied in the PM (so be sure to do your research before you start patting it onto your skin). Whether you're looking to improve or maintain your skins complexion, a serum is the miracle in a bottle that will be your skin's next best friend.

Just incase I haven't convince you already, here are my 5 reasons you should use a serum:

1. Serums are easily added into your current skincare regime. It's all about layering and serums work best if they're applied after cleansing and toning, and before moisturising. As a rule of thumb, products should be applied from thinnest to thickest.

2. There's a serum for all skin concerns, whether you want to actively target fine lines, blemishes, acne, uneven skin tone or dryness. While there are serums that are an all-rounder, like the Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronised Recovery Complex II, I currently prefer a serum that specifically targets my concerns.

3. A good serum has a high concentration of active ingredients and is able to penetrate the into the skin due to their typically very fine texture, unlike moisturiser, which rather acts as a barrier. This means that the ingredients actually get to do their job, such as Vitamin C, retinol and peptides, among other skin-loving things.

4. Serums are perfect  for all skin types. Use by itself if you have oily skin or under your daily moisturiser for those with normal to dry skin. Even if your skin is oily, I would still recommend using a moisturiser though, as it can provide a protective layer over the serum, preventing it from evaporating.

5. They feel amazing on the skin. Honestly, it's my favourite step in my skincare regime just because they apply so nicely and typically make skin glow instantly (especially the  Elizabeth Arden Daily Youth Restoring Serum Ceramide Capsules). There is something so satisfying about patting on a rich serum.

MY FAVOURITE SERUMS:

If the  Elizabeth Arden Daily Youth Restoring Serum Ceramide Capsules won't hook you on serums, then I don't know what will. While I personally find the packaging to be somewhat messy (you wouldn't believe how many empty capsules I find lying around), it is most certainly excused because the actual serum itself is to-die-for. While it feels somewhat oily on application (almost more 'silky', actually), the product is soaked up by my skin after a couple of minutes almost completely and has an instant glow. This stuff was my saving grace during a hectic MBFWA earlier this year.

I read somewhere a while back that a good serum won't have a nice fragrance and that if it does, it couldn't possibly be doing it's job. Oh, how very wrong that person was as they'd clearly not tried the  Ole Henriksen Truth Serum Collagen Booster (exclusive to Sephora Australia). This stuff smells absolutely, ridiculously, fabulously delicious. It's literally like an orange squeezed into a glass container. Packed with Vitamin C, orange (no surprises there) and green tea extract, this serum brightens and hydrates skin while also reducing the appearance of fine wrinkles.

The  Grown Alchemist Detox Serum Antioxidant +3 is another one of my weekly favourites. It's a very thin, watery kind of substance that soaks in instantly and detoxifies the skin from environmental and dietary factors. The thing I love the most about this one is that it doubles up as an eye cream as well, as it can be dabbed around the orbital bone.

If you're looking for something a little richer, the  Grown Alchemist Brightening Serum is the newest serum I've been trialling and I'm really excited to see the results. It's a potent formula full of hyaluronic acid, rose extract and phyto-complex actives that lighten and whiten skin, targeting hyper-pigmentation (can I get a hell yeah?). Used day and night, I'm hoping to see some changes very soon!

After really adoring their Detoxifying Facial Scrub (you can read all about it here), I also had high expectations for the  Sukin Super Greens Facial Recovery Serum. It's another lightweight formula that focusses on giving skin that amazing 'lit from within' glow. If you're on a budget, this Sukin Serum is a great alternative.

Being in my mid-twenties, I'm starting to see some fine lines on my face, so the  Ultraceuticals Ultra C10+ Firming Serum sounded like the perfect serum to plump lines and prevent any future ones (well, somewhat anyway). A little hint: a lot goes a long long way with this product, so even though it's rather expensive, it's going to last you forever. Goodbye frown lines (AKA. going-blind-squinty-eyes).

Another budget-friendly product, the  Nude by Nature Nude Miracle Serum is all about hydrating and illuminating the skin, and is definitely one of those really great 'all rounder' serums. Add this one to your skincare regime to fake an extra few hours of sleep every night (we wish, right #GirlBosses?).

While it's not currently available online (and I'm not sure if it's in-store - let me know if you see it!), I still wanted to feature the  Sephora Renew & Peel Super Serum. Containing glycolic acid, the serum is great for those of us that are prone to blemishes, which reduces the appearance of spots, as well as minimising pores and refining the skins texture.
