The First Day of 2015: My Thoughts on Resolutions

Happy New Years!

________

While many of you will set a list of New Years goals, some of you will gawk and think 'why the heck do we make New Years Resolutions?', and fair enough. It's an annual ritual that somehow allows us a clean slate and a state-of-mind where we can start again and create better lives. Boo hoo. Why don't we do that on a daily basis? A weekly basis? Heck, even a monthly basis?

I'll admit to having these thoughts myself, even just this past week, but I still believe in New Years Resolutions. Why, you might ask? Because what do we have to lose by setting a few resolutions and goals for the next 365 days? Most of them won't be accomplished; something we accept every December. And then there's those few that do actually come through at the end a success. You might have only utilised your gym membership half a dozen times in January and zilch for the rest of the year, but you read 12 new books over the course of 12-months. Success! You may not have risen from bed at 6AM and been tightly tucked up by 10PM each weekday, but heck, you managed not to turn your bedroom into a floordrobe for a whole 365 days. Hip-hip-hooray!

My point is, if you don't set these resolutions and goals, you won't achieve them. However, if you do, you're already one-step ahead. Sure, you'll probably fail, but you're also giving yourself the chance to succeed. Write down those resolutions and then break them up into smaller, achievable goals.

I find, for me, the best way to do this is month-by-month, and then week-by-week, and, yes, day-by-day. Maybe it's your resolution to keep a constantly tidy home (ahem, this is a big one for me)? Instead of having a whole day every week dedicated to cleaning ( eww), break it up throughout the week; wipe down the kitchen bench or unload the dishwasher when waiting for the microwave or toaster, make your bed as soon as you wake-up, put everything away the moment you finish a task. It may feel like a chore for a while, but pretty soon it'll just be a natural habit and come December, you'll be able to proudly check that one off the list. And, finally, make sure you share your resolutions with somebody. By making it known, you'll feel more obliged to work towards the goal.

And finally, a very Happy New Years to my savvy and stylish readers here at Lion in the Wild! May 2015 be filled with love, laughter and lots of success.

What are your thoughts on New Years Resolutions? I'd love to know what your goals are for 2015!
