7 Things I've Learned From Blogging

There's no doubting that I've learned a lot taking Lion in the Wild

from hobby to full-time career, so here's a little insight into my blog life.

________

1. How to be ridiculously organised. I've always had a thing for organising, whether it be creating timetables for university or sorting out my makeup cupboard. Even when I was a little girl, I'd spend hours just laying out all of my Barbie's clothes and shoes because it was fun (some feminist I am!). And while I have to be super duper organised when it comes to blogging, I also have to act on it as well, otherwise nothing will ever get done. I update my calendars, notebooks and lists daily now to keep up with collaborations, the blog schedule, social media, meetings, photo shoots and everything else on a day-to-day basis.

2. Blogging is a lot more work that I ever imagined. In the world of blogging there is no such thing as a 'day off'. Even if I get the luxury to have a whole day to spend time with friends and family (or watching TV series on the couch with Brad), I still have to make sure I'm updating my social media channels, especially Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. I work from the moment I wake up to when I go to sleep, doing anything from planning content, replying to hundreds of daily emails, styling, location scouting, photo shoots, editing, writing, researching, scheduling, bookkeeping and the list goes on (and on and on). I'm definitely not complaining though; I love what I do!

3. It can open doors to amazing opportunities. A blog is your online portfolio, a diary of your life and a window into who you are, so it's no surprise that it has the possibility to bring in opportunities that otherwise wouldn't have come to life, yet somehow it's are just that; a surprise. I started Lion in the Wild as a creative outlet without ever having the intention of turning it into a business, but here we are, working with incredible brands, designers and people, which leads me to my next point.

4. Go with the flow. I'm a 'planning' type of person. I need to have everything laid out in front of me before I start anything. Maybe that's because I don't like taking risks or making mistakes, but that's just how I've always been, until recently. A combination of being a blogger and being with Brad (definitely not the 'planning' type) has made me more open to things that come up unexpectedly and just go with the flow. I never expected to be blogging full-time as I mentioned before, but the opportunity arose and I decided to veer off my planned path, with a little persuasion and support from Brad.

5. My least favourite part is taking photos of myself. Well, apart from bookkeeping (boring!). I'm not a natural in front of the camera. In 90% of my photos I have a double chin or I'm doing an awkward pose or my face is scrunched up. While I've definitely learnt how to be more natural in front of a camera, most of that comes from practice and working with somebody that I'm 100% comfortable with (AKA the boyfriend, Brad). All those double chins aside though, I just really love other aspects of blogging more, like art direction, writing and content creation.

6. People are ridiculously nice. The fashion industry is known for being pretty damn brutal, but I've only ever experienced sincere kindness. It might be naive of me to say, but the majority of people I work with are truly wonderful and an absolute blessing in which to collaborate. I've met a lot bloggers, PR's, and marketing and social media executives that are so damn lovely, many of whom I now call my friends. The thing is, these women (mostly anyway), support and push each other to be the best they can be. It's inspiring.

7. The Internet is a small world. I live in Perth, one of the world's most isolated cities and has, in the past, been known to be a little bubble. Thanks to the rise of the Internet, the bubble has been burst and living thousands of kilometres away from any other major capital city is no longer a barrier, especially for the creative industries. While I do head over to Sydney at least a few times a year to go to events, visit PR and designer showrooms, and for meetings to discuss future projects and collaborations, luckily for me most of my business is done online.
