The Showdown: Maybelline Lash Sensational VS The Colossal Mascara
An epic beauty battle.
________
Introducing our new series, The Showdown, where we pit product against product, brand against brand in an epic beauty battle. Sounds like fun, right? I, for one, can find it very difficult to decide what product is the best for me, especially when you're overwhelmed by choices at your local drugstore, beauty counter or cosmetic store. I mean, how the heck do you choose just one? How can you know that you're spending your hard earned cash on the best possible product for you? So, I'm going to review two similar products, compare the pair and, yep, choose my favourite.
For the first post in the series, I've tested two products from Maybelline: the Lash Sensational Full Fan Effect Mascara and The Colossal Go Extreme! Leather Black Mascara. Mascara is the product that is the most difficult to determine the best for you and really depends on your own personal experience, since you can't actually test it pre-purchase, so I couldn't think of a better way to kick off The Showdown. Hey, ho, let's go!
________
MAYBELLINE LASH SENSATIONAL FULL FAN EFFECT MASCARA
The first mascara I tested was the Maybelline Lash Sensational Full Fan Effect Mascara in Black Pearl, which claims to coat 'every single layer of lashes', resulting in thick, fanned-out lashes. As somebody with lashes of very average length and thickness, I would never say no to more volume, but I was a little worried that perhaps the mascara would emphasise my lack of length. I'm also generally not a huge fan of curved brushes, however I do tend to gravitate towards wands with rubber bristles.
First up, I wiggled the shorter bristles of the inner curve from the root of my lashes to the ends, and was convinced instantly that this is a mascara that truly does reach every single lash. I then used the outer curve with the longer bristles to fan and lengthen my eyelashes, and repeated this step. My goodness, this is an impressive formula. It went on smoothly, didn't clump and layered very well to create thick-looking lashes without compromising on length. Even on the bottom, where I used the same technique, I loved how it really did 'fan' them, despite a little moderate clumping that was easily brushed out.
________
MAYBELLINE THE COLOSSAL GO EXTREME! LEATHER BLACK MASCARA
The second mascara I trialled was the new Maybelline The Colossal Go Extreme! Leather Black Mascara that also focusses on adding volume, but this time with Maybelline's biggest brush (similar to the Mega Plush Mascara brush, but fuller and thicker). The bigger the brush, the bigger the lashes, right?
The truth is, that while I loved this particular way mascara seemed to curl my lashes upwards whilst adding plenty of volume, it also seemed like there was no way to avoid the dreaded black dots all over my eye lids. I also, in an attempt to coat my smaller inner-most lashes, got a little on the side of my nose (a very attractive look, I'm sure). I guess that's what happens when you combine a clumsy hand and a humungous brush.
________
THE VERDICT
Let's come right out with it, shall we? The winner, in my humble opinion, is the Maybelline Lash Sensational Full Fan Effect Mascara. Now, it's not that I don't like The Colossal Go Extreme! Leather Black Mascara. Its bristles coated my lashes in a thick layer of black, which really opened and awakened by eyes, and while I don't mind a little clumpiness, those that do would definitely prefer the Lash Sensational. Its smooth formula coated my lashes from thick to thin(ner), without ending in a sudden clump of product, giving the illusion that, why yes, my lashes are naturally this thick and long, and not just covered in layers of mascara.
Have you tried these mascara's yet? Which one wins your showdown?
