Can You Really Rock a Neon Blush?

Without looking like a drag queen.
________

I've always been intrigued by the brightly pigmented blushes sitting in all their eye-catching glory on various beauty counters (NARS, I'm looking at you), yet could never bring myself to splurge on one. I mean, how on Earth could I possibly wear a neon blush without looking like a drag queen? Sure, they might look kick ass in an Instagram flatlay, but I'm all about wearability. Yes? No? As it turns out, I was dead wrong.

When the Sephora Collection Colorful Blush in I'm Shocked! rocked up on my doorstep (oh, what a coincidence!), I was intrigued. I proceeded to make a grab for a big fluffy brush, dab lightly at the hot pink pan, tap any excess powder off and, with a loose hand, swiped the bristles along the apples of my cheeks. Voila! It was like I had swept a warm summers day over my face, which had an instant brightening and lifting effect. It was official; the neon blush is the new bold lipstick. You know, the one beauty product you can always count on to brighten your face no matter how little sleep you've acquired (or not acquired).

HOW TO ROCK A NEON BLUSH:

1. Use a big fluffy brush (I'm using the Too Faced Powder Brush - sold out, but this Real Techniques brush is similar). A dense brush will apply more product, whereas a more sparse brush will apply it much lighter.

2. Apply the teensiest amount of blush to the middle bristles of the brush, which will allow the surrounding bristles to blend it evenly without adding to the intensity. Just a light dab at the powder will do.

3. Lightly sweep the blush across the apples of your cheeks. And don't apply it too high on the cheekbone; by swiping it only on the apples means you'll look less drag and more flush.

4. If you have a heavy hand, hold the brush at the very end with your fingers as you apply it, creating a much lighter sweeping motion.

5. If you're on the verge of resembling a round-cheeked circus clown, then simply layer a dusting of setting powder or illuminator over the top to wash it out. You can even try to blend it in more with a BeautyBlender. Easy.

So, would you wear a neon blush?
